Catch crop mixtures have higher potential for nutrient carry-over than pure stands under changing environments

چکیده

Winter catch crops are grown to scavenge nutrients over a period of unfavorable growth conditions and conserve for subsequent release the following main crop. Since environmental have strong impact on nutrient capture in roots shoots individual crop species, we anticipated that mixtures will be more durable efficient due compensatory effects among component species. We tested this hypothesis determined nitrogen phosphorus accumulation four species pure vs. mixed stands at two sites or three years. Element concentrations were root shoot biomass each used calculate pool fixed biomass. A qPCR-based technique was applied quantify based species-specific DNA sequences. Despite considerable variation across environments, overall plant white mustard (Sinapis alba), lacy phacelia (Phacelia tanacetifolia) bristle oat (Avena strigosa) similar higher than Egyptian clover (Trifolium alexandrinum). While varied 6- 24-fold depending conditions, only ~3-fold mixtures, with less pronounced In general, comparable Roots contributed 26–46% 36–48% total these biomass, thus emphasizing importance as belowground potential carry-over Although mixture mostly dominated by namely phacelia, it captured even larger amounts best-performing stand under any condition. This case shoot- root-bound nutrients. Our results indicate durability cultures variations. The amount meets average postharvest is left wide range cash crops, represent an management tool rotations.

Predicted versus measured photosynthetic water-use efficiency of crop stands under dynamically changing field environments.

Water-use efficiency (WUE) is critical in determining the adaptation and productivity of plants in water-limited areas, either under the present climate or future global change. Data on WUE are often highly variable and a unifying and quantitative approach is needed to analyse and predict WUE for different environments. Hsiao has already proposed a set of paradigm equations based on leaf gas ex...

Estimating Spiking Irregularities Under Changing Environments

We considered a gamma distribution of interspike intervals as a statistical model for neuronal spike generation. A gamma distribution is a natural extension of the Poisson process taking the effect of a refractory period into account. The model is specified by two parameters: a time-dependent firing rate and a shape parameter that characterizes spiking irregularities of individual neurons. Beca...

C3 grasses have higher nutritional quality than C4 grasses under ambient and elevated atmospheric CO2

Grasses with the C3 photosynthetic pathway are commonly considered to be more nutritious host plants than C4 grasses, but the nutritional quality of C3 grasses is also more greatly impacted by elevated atmospheric CO2 than is that of C4 grasses; C3 grasses produce greater amounts of nonstructural carbohydrates and have greater declines in their nitrogen content than do C4 grasses under elevated...

Corn yield and yield stability under varying nutrient management, crop rotation, and rainfall

Long-term yield performance and yield stability of common cropping systems needs to be simultaneously assessed at various fertility regimes. Based on a consecutive 19-year field trial, including eight fertilization treatments with different combinations of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K) and recycled manure (RM), the effects of fertilization and crop rotation on corn (Zea mays L.) y...
